How the AP Human Geography exam is built — two equally weighted sections

Total exam time is about 2 hours 15 minutes. The multiple-choice and free-response sections each count for half of your score.

  1. Section I — Multiple Choice60 questions · 60 minutes · 50% of the score. Many questions come in sets tied to a stimulus: a map, chart, table, photo, infographic, or short passage.
  2. 10-minute break — a short pause
  3. Section II — Free Response3 questions · 75 minutes · 50% of the score. No documents to read; each FRQ has lettered parts (A–E or A–G) testing skills like describe, explain, and compare.

Scored 1–5. There is no penalty for wrong multiple-choice answers — answer every question.

The two sections count equally, so practicing free-response writing matters as much as drilling multiple choice.[3] Across the multiple-choice section, the seven units carry the weights below — Unit 1 is the lightest, and Units 2 through 7 each carry the same 12–17% range:

About 8–10% of the exam — the toolkit for the whole course. Unit 1 sets up the spatial concepts, map types, and data tools geographers use to ask and answer questions about the world.[1]

Location, Place & Maps

pins a place with exact coordinates; describes it in relation to other places. A place’s is its physical character, while its situation is its position relative to routes and other places. Maps come in two broad types:

The Demographic Transition Model (DTM)

A model of how a country’s birth and death rates change as it develops. The gap between the two rates is population growth.

  1. Stage 1 · High StationaryHigh birth rate, high death rate. Population is low and stable. Pre-industrial societies; almost no country is here today.
  2. Stage 2 · Early ExpandingBirth rate stays high but the death rate falls (better food, sanitation, medicine). Population grows rapidly. Many less-developed countries.
  3. Stage 3 · Late ExpandingBirth rate falls as urbanization, education, and women's roles change. Death rate stays low. Population still grows, but more slowly.
  4. Stage 4 · Low StationaryLow birth rate, low death rate. Population is high and stable. Most more-developed countries (United States, much of Europe).
  5. Stage 5 · Declining (proposed)Birth rate falls below the death rate. Population shrinks and ages. Examples often cited: Japan, Germany, Italy.

The death rate drops first (Stage 2), then the birth rate catches up (Stage 3) — that lag is what drives the population boom every exam asks about.

Distinguish folk culture (small, rural, slow to change, distinctive landscapes) from popular culture (large, fast-changing, media-spread, tending toward uniform landscapes). Cultural traits include language, religion, ethnicity, and gender roles.

Cultural Diffusion

Two broad types: (spreads outward while staying strong at the hearth) and (carried by migrants). Expansion diffusion has three forms:

Industrialization & Location

The Industrial Revolution began in Britain and diffused outward. Weber’s least-cost theory locates industry to minimize transport, labor, and agglomeration costs.

Economic activity is sorted into primary (extraction), secondary (manufacturing), tertiary (services), quaternary (information), and quinary (high-level decisions) sectors. Globalization brings outsourcing, special economic zones, and global supply chains.

Measuring Development

Money alone is misleading. The combines life expectancy, education, and income per capita. Other measures: the Gender Inequality Index, the Gini coefficient (income inequality), and GDP/GNI per capita. Pair these with the demographic transition to compare countries’ development.

Development Theories & Trade

Two contrasting theories dominate this unit. is optimistic: every country can climb the same five-stage ladder. is structural: the global economy is one system of core, semi-periphery, and periphery.

World-systems theory (Wallerstein) — core, semi-periphery, periphery
CoreWealthy, industrialized regions with advanced technology, high wages, and skilled labor. They consume raw materials and dominate global finance (United States, Western Europe, Japan).
Semi-peripheryMiddle-income, industrializing regions that both exploit the periphery and are exploited by the core (China, Brazil, India, Mexico). They are upwardly mobile within the system.
PeripheryLess-developed regions that supply raw materials and cheap labor, with weak institutions and low wages. Profits flow outward to the core.

Wallerstein argued the global economy is one interconnected system, not a ladder each country climbs alone — the core stays rich partly because the periphery stays poor.

Functional region

Geographic Information System (GIS)
A computer system that captures, stores, analyzes, and displays layered geographic data on maps.
Gravity model
A model predicting that the interaction between two places increases with their size and decreases with the distance between them.
Green Revolution
The mid-twentieth-century spread of high-yield seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and irrigation that sharply raised crop output.
Hierarchical diffusion
A type of expansion diffusion that spreads first between important people or large places, then down to others.
Human Development Index (HDI)
A measure combining life expectancy, education, and income per capita to gauge a country's overall development.
Lingua franca
A common language adopted to enable trade or communication among speakers of different native tongues.
Nation
A group of people who share a common culture, language, history, and identity and feel they belong together.
Nation-state
A state whose political borders closely match the territory of one dominant nation, like Japan or Iceland.
Perceptual region
A region defined by people's feelings and beliefs about an area, such as 'the South,' with fuzzy, contested borders. Also called a vernacular region.
Population pyramid
An age-sex graph showing a population's age structure; a wide base signals rapid growth, a narrow base slow growth or decline.
Primate city
A country's largest city, more than twice the size of the next largest and dominant in its economy and culture.
Push and pull factors
Push factors drive people away from a place (war, unemployment); pull factors attract them to a new one (jobs, safety).
Rank-size rule
A pattern in which a country's nth-largest city is about 1/n the size of its largest city.
Rate of natural increase (RNI)
The crude birth rate minus the crude death rate, shown as a percentage; it excludes migration.
Relative location
Where a place is in relation to other places (for example, 'an hour north of the capital'). It can change as connections change.
Relocation diffusion
The spread of a cultural trait carried by people who migrate, often weakening at the original hearth.
Rostow's stages of growth
A model proposing that all countries develop through five stages from traditional society to high mass consumption.
Site vs situation
Site is the physical character of a place (terrain, soil, water); situation is its location relative to other places and routes.
Sovereignty
A state's recognized right to govern itself and its territory without outside interference.
State
A politically organized territory with defined borders, a permanent population, and a sovereign government.
Syncretism
The blending of two or more cultural or religious traditions into a new combined form.
Threshold and range
Threshold is the minimum population needed to support a service; range is the maximum distance people will travel for it.
Time-space compression
The way improvements in transportation and communication shrink the friction of distance, making distant places feel closer.
Total fertility rate (TFR)
The average number of children a woman would have over her childbearing years; replacement level is about 2.1.
Von Thünen model
A model explaining agricultural land use as concentric rings around a market, set by transportation cost and bid-rent.
World-systems theory
Immanuel Wallerstein's model of the global economy as one interconnected system of core, semi-periphery, and periphery.
