Relationship Types
The whole subtest comes down to spotting the relationship. The most common ones repeat constantly — learn them and most items become quick:

The reliable technique is to build a sentence that captures the first pair, then apply that exact sentence to each choice. For PETAL : FLOWER, the sentence is “a petal is one part of a whole flower.” Test it: “a page is one part of a whole book” fits, so PAGE : BOOK is the answer.

Setting Up Word Problems
The hardest part is translation, not arithmetic. Read for what’s asked, list the given numbers with their units, choose the operation, then check the answer is reasonable. Keep these high-frequency formulas automatic:

Because the answer is the closestsynonym, you don’t need a perfect match — you need the nearest one among the four. With only ~12 seconds per word, vocabulary built ahead of time is what wins here. A short high-yield set:

A main-idea question asks for the central point the whole passage supports — broader than any single sentence. A detail question asks for a specific fact the passage states; locate it directly. The correct main-idea choice fits the entire passage, not just one paragraph.
Inference & Tone
An is a conclusion the passage implies but doesn’t state. Pick the best-supported choice, not the most dramatic. Tone questions ask how the author feels — read word choice for clues (admiring, critical, neutral).

6 · Situational Judgment
16 questions · 35 minutes. Each item describes a realistic — usually a leadership or interpersonal conflict — and asks you to judge the responses, typically picking the most effective and the least effective action. It is scored separately from the six aptitude composites and produces its own Situational Judgment score.[1]
There is no formula to memorize and no fact to study; the subtest rewards mature, mission-focused judgment that also cares for people. Favor responses that address the problem directly, respect the chain of command, and balance accomplishing the mission with looking after Airmen. Avoid extremes — ignoring a problem, going around your supervisor, or harsh overreactions are usually the “least effective” choices.
7 · Physical Science
20 questions · 10 minutes. High-school-level physical science: mechanics and the laws of motion, simple machines, basic chemistry, and Earth science. Notably, Physical Science feeds no composite — so if your target track ignores it, don’t over-invest.[1]
Physics & Mechanics
Newton’s three laws anchor this section: the law of inertia (objects keep their state unless a force acts), force = mass × acceleration, and every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Know the difference between mass and weight, kinetic and potential energy, and the basic simple machines.

The Attitude Indicator
The attitude indicator (artificial horizon) shows blue sky on top, brown ground on the bottom, and the horizon line between them. The miniature wings show the aircraft’s position:
More sky below the wings = nose up (climb); more ground = nose down (dive).
A tilted horizon line = banked; right wing low = banked right.
Pair the attitude indicator with the magnetic compass (heading) to read the aircraft's full orientation.
The Compass & Heading
The compass gives the heading: N is 0°/360°, E is 90°, S is 180°, and W is 270°. The aircraft is flying toward the indicated heading. Read the compass for direction first, then the attitude indicator for pitch and bank, then match the silhouette.

Principles of Flight
Start with the four forces of flight and how the control surfaces move the aircraft about its three axes:

Your subtest scores don’t stand alone — they roll up into six scores, and the Air Force qualifies you on the composites, not the raw subtests. This is the most important thing to understand about the AFOQT: the subtests that matter are the ones that feed your composite.[2]
Each composite is a weighted mix of specific subtests. The Self-Description Inventory and Physical Science feed no composite.
Math Knowledge and Table Reading appear in the most composites — they are the highest-leverage subtests to master.
Note two subtests that feed no composite: Physical Science and the unscored (a 240-item personality questionnaire). The subtest produces its own separate score. Scores are reported as , and there is no single pass/fail — each composite is measured against the minimum for the track you want:

- Air Battle Manager. The ABM composite is built from Verbal Analogies, Math Knowledge, Table Reading, Instrument Comprehension, Block Counting, and Aviation Information.
- Academic Aptitude
- An AFOQT composite combining all Verbal subtests and all Quantitative subtests — a broad measure of academic ability.
- AFOQT
- The Air Force Officer Qualifying Test — a multiple-aptitude test required of U.S. Air Force officer-commissioning candidates and applicants for rated (flying) positions. The current version is Form T.
- Ailerons
- Control surfaces on the wings' trailing edges that control roll (bank).
- Angle of attack
- The angle between a wing's chord line and the oncoming air. If it gets too high, airflow separates and the wing stalls.

- Composite

- CSO

- Form T

- Inference
- A conclusion a passage implies but does not state outright; the correct inference is the one the text most directly supports.
- Lift
- The upward aerodynamic force on a wing that opposes weight; created by air moving over the wing.
- Percentile
- How AFOQT scores are reported (1–99). A percentile of 80 means you scored higher than 80% of the reference group — it is not a percent-correct.
- Pilot composite
- An AFOQT composite built from Math Knowledge, Table Reading, Instrument Comprehension, and Aviation Information; used to qualify pilot applicants.
- Pythagorean theorem
- For a right triangle with legs a and b and hypotenuse c, a² + b² = c².
- Quadratic formula
- x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) ÷ (2a), which solves any quadratic ax² + bx + c = 0.
- Quantitative composite
- Built from Arithmetic Reasoning and Math Knowledge. All officer applicants generally need a Quantitative score of at least 10.
- Rudder
- The control surface on the vertical tail that controls yaw (nose left and right).
- Self-Description Inventory
- A 240-item personality questionnaire on the AFOQT. It is unscored and does not affect any composite.
- Situational Judgment
- A subtest that presents realistic officer scenarios and asks you to judge the most and least effective responses. It is scored separately from the six composites.
- Stall
- A loss of lift that occurs when the angle of attack is too great and air can no longer flow smoothly over the wing — not an engine failure.
- Table Reading
- A heavily speeded subtest in which you locate a value on an X (column) and Y (row) coordinate grid as quickly and accurately as possible.
- Thrust
- The forward force produced by the engine or propeller; it opposes drag.
- Verbal analogy
- A comparison that asks you to find the word pair whose relationship matches a given pair — A is to B as C is to ___.
- Verbal composite
- Built from Verbal Analogies, Word Knowledge, and Reading Comprehension. All officer applicants generally need a Verbal score of at least 15.
