- Pallet jack (walkie)
- A Class III electric or manual hand truck used to move palletized loads at floor level.
- Cushion tire
- A solid rubber tire for smooth indoor floors; a smaller, tighter-turning truck than a pneumatic-tire model.
- Pneumatic tire
- An air-filled (or solid pneumatic) tire with deeper tread for rougher and outdoor surfaces.
- Data (capacity) plate
- The nameplate stating rated capacity at a load center, truck weight, fuel type, tires, and attachments; must be legible and present.
- Overhead guard
- A required protective structure above the operator that shields against falling objects; never remove it.
- Load backrest extension
- A barrier on the carriage that keeps the load from sliding rearward toward the mast and operator.
- Mast
- The vertical assembly that raises, lowers, and tilts the forks; its moving parts are a pinch and crush hazard.
- Carriage
- The part of the mast the forks attach to; it moves up and down the mast rails and carries the backrest.
- Forks (tines)
- The horizontal arms that carry the load; insert fully and center the load before lifting.
- Tilt cylinders
- Cylinders that tilt the mast back to cradle the load for travel and forward to deposit it.
- Back tilt
- Tilting the mast rearward to cradle the load against the backrest for stable travel.
- Forward tilt
- Tilting the mast forward to set a load down — used only once positioned at the rack, not while traveling.
- Seat belt (sit-down truck)
- Keeps the operator inside the overhead-guard protective zone during a tip-over — the survivable choice.
- Attachment
- A device (clamp, sideshifter, fork extension) added to the truck; it can lower rated capacity and may require updated marking.
- Sideshifter
- An attachment that shifts the forks left or right to position a load without moving the whole truck.
- Lift chains
- The chains that raise and lower the carriage; inspect for wear, stretch, and damage during the pre-op check.
- Stability triangle
- The triangle formed by the two front wheels and the rear steer-axle pivot; the truck stays upright only while the combined CG stays inside it.
- Center of gravity (CG)
- The point where weight is concentrated; forklift stability depends on the combined CG of the truck plus its load.
- Combined center of gravity
- The CG of the truck and load together; it shifts forward, up, and side to side as the load changes and must stay in the triangle.
- Load center
- The horizontal distance from the fork face to the load's center of gravity, commonly rated at 24 inches.
- Rated capacity
- The maximum weight a forklift can safely lift, stated on the data plate at a specific load center; never exceed it.
- Effect of a longer load center
- If the load's CG is farther out than rated, the forward tipping moment grows and safe capacity decreases — derate the load.
- Tipping moment
- The turning force a load creates; it grows with load weight, load-center distance, and lift height.
- Lateral tip-over
- A sideways roll — the most common and most deadly forklift accident — caused by fast/sharp turns, raised loads, or crossing a grade.
- Forward tip-over
- Tipping forward over the front wheels from overloading, a long load center, braking hard, or tilting forward with a raised load.
- Tip-over survival (sit-down)
- Stay belted, grip the wheel, brace the feet, and lean away from the fall — never jump out.
- Why not jump in a tip-over
- Jumping is the leading cause of tip-over deaths; the operator can be thrown out and crushed by the overhead guard.
- Carry the load low
- Travel with the forks about 4–6 inches off the floor, tilted slightly back, to keep the CG low and inside the triangle.
- Raised-load instability
- A raised load lifts the center of gravity and sharply reduces lateral stability — lower it before traveling or turning.
- Turning and stability
- Turning creates side forces; lower the load and slow down before turning to avoid a lateral tip-over.
- Overloading
- Exceeding rated capacity pushes the combined CG forward, out of the stability triangle, and risks a forward tip-over.
- Off-center load
- A load not centered on the forks shifts the CG sideways and reduces stability; always center the load.
- Derating
- Reducing the load a truck will carry below its nameplate rating when the load center is long or the load is uneven.
- Grade and stability
- Traveling across (sideways on) a grade shifts the CG downhill and can cause a tip-over; keep the load pointed uphill instead.
- Stability and lift height
- Raising a load increases the tipping moment and reduces stability, so only raise it when squared up and stopped at the rack.
- Capacity vs. attachment
- Adding an attachment moves the load center and adds weight, lowering the truck's effective rated capacity.
- Pre-operation inspection
- The start-of-shift check of a forklift's controls, brakes, horn, tires, forks, mast, fluids, and safety devices before service.
- Inspection frequency
- At least daily, before each shift, before the truck is placed in service (before each shift when used around the clock).
- Out-of-service rule
- Any powered industrial truck not in safe operating condition must be removed from service until repaired.
- Defects that ground a truck
- A parking brake that won't hold, a dead horn, a hydraulic leak that lets the lift drift down, bad steering, or worn forks/chains.
- Hydraulic drift
- A leak that lets the raised forks settle on their own; a defect that removes the truck from service and must be reported.
- Tag out of service
- Mark a defective forklift so it cannot be used and report the defect, rather than working around it.
- Lead-acid battery
- The rechargeable battery in an electric forklift; charging releases flammable hydrogen and the electrolyte is sulfuric acid.
- Hydrogen gas hazard
- Charging a lead-acid battery releases hydrogen, a flammable, explosive gas — charge in a ventilated area with no ignition sources.
- Battery charging area rules
- Designated, well-ventilated area; no open flames, smoking, or sparks; fire protection and an eyewash/shower available.
- Battery service PPE
- Face/eye protection and acid-resistant gloves, with an accessible eyewash station, because of the sulfuric-acid electrolyte.
- Sulfuric acid electrolyte
- The corrosive liquid in a lead-acid battery that can cause chemical burns to skin and eyes; handle with PPE.
- LPG (propane)
- Liquefied petroleum gas fuel for IC forklifts; heavier than air and highly flammable, so fueling is done engine-off in ventilation.
- LPG refueling rules
- Shut off the engine, work in ventilation away from ignition sources, secure the tank, and check for leaks; don't overfill.
- Carbon monoxide (CO)
- A colorless, odorless, toxic gas in IC engine exhaust; running an IC forklift indoors needs ventilation and CO monitoring.
- Why electric trucks indoors
- Electric forklifts produce no engine exhaust, so they avoid the carbon-monoxide hazard of IC trucks in enclosed spaces.
- Fuel storage
- Store LPG cylinders upright in approved locations away from heat and exits; handle and refuel away from ignition sources.
- Maintenance authorization
- Only authorized, trained personnel may repair a forklift; disconnect power before working on electrical systems.
- Brake check
- Verify both the service brake and the parking brake hold during the pre-op inspection; a non-holding brake grounds the truck.
- Horn check
- Confirm the horn works in the pre-op check — it is the primary way to warn pedestrians at corners and intersections.
- Tire and fork inspection
- Check tires for wear/damage and forks for cracks, bends, or excessive wear; damaged forks can drop a load.
- Picking up a load
- Center the load on the forks, insert the forks fully beneath it, then tilt back slightly before lifting.
- Traveling with a load
- Carry it low (about 4–6 inches off the floor), tilted slightly back, at a safe speed for conditions.
- Obstructed forward view
- If the load blocks the view, travel in reverse so the path is visible, using a spotter when needed.
- Safe operating speed
- Drive at a speed for conditions (surface, visibility, load, traffic) that lets the truck stop safely and keep load control.
- Grade rule (memory hook)
- On a ramp the load always points uphill — forward up the grade, reverse down the grade, with the load upgrade.
- Loaded, going up a grade
- Drive forward up the ramp with the load pointed upgrade so the load stays on the high side.
- Loaded, going down a grade
- Drive in reverse down the ramp with the load pointed upgrade so the load can't slide forward off the forks.
- Crossing a grade
- Never travel sideways across a grade — it shifts the CG downhill and invites a lateral tip-over.
- Unattended truck
- OSHA term for when the operator is 25 ft or more away or out of view; triggers the full shutdown procedure.
- Unattended shutdown steps
- Fully lower the forks, neutralize the controls, set the parking brake, and shut off the power.
- Dock stop (within 25 ft, in view)
- For a brief stop within 25 ft and in view, just fully lower the forks and neutralize the controls.
- Parking rules
- Park on level ground, clear of exits, doorways, aisles, fire equipment; never park on a ramp with the load raised.
- Pedestrian right of way
- Pedestrians have the right of way; operators must yield, slow down, and keep a safe distance.
- Blind corner / intersection
- Slow down, sound the horn, and proceed only when the way is clear.
- Struck-by hazard
- Pedestrians struck by a forklift are a leading cause of forklift deaths — hence horn use, slow speed, and right-of-way rules.
- No riders rule
- No passengers on a truck not designed to carry them; never let anyone ride the forks or hold on.
- Lifting a person
- Allowed only on a securely attached, approved work platform with guardrails and falling-object protection — never on bare forks.
- Mast/raised-fork hazard
- Never put a body part between the mast uprights or under raised forks — crushing and amputation hazards.
- Stacking at height
- Square up to the rack, stop, raise the load straight up, and tilt forward only once it is positioned over the target.
- Dock plate and trailer safety
- Before entering a trailer/railcar: set the trailer brakes, chock the wheels, secure the dock plate, and use trailer-jack supports.
- Trailer creep
- Gradual movement of a trailer away from the dock while loading; prevented by chocks, brakes, and restraints.
- Speed on turns and surfaces
- Slow for turns, wet or uneven floors, and congested areas; high speed reduces stopping distance and load control.
- Keep clear of edges
- Stay back from dock edges, pits, and floor openings; a wheel over the edge can drop or tip the truck.
- Seat belt use
- Wear the seat belt whenever operating a sit-down truck so the overhead guard and frame can protect you in a tip-over.
- Three-point contact
- Use three points of contact (two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand) when mounting or dismounting the truck.
- Hands and feet inside
- Keep arms, legs, and head inside the running lines of the truck while operating; never reach outside the frame.
- Floor and aisle conditions
- Watch for spills, debris, loose objects, and surface changes; report hazards and slow down for poor conditions.
- Most-protective-action rule
- When choices compete, the right answer yields to pedestrians, slows down, lowers the load, or takes an unsafe truck out of service.
- Following distance
- Keep at least three truck lengths from another forklift, and never pass a truck at an intersection or blind spot.
- Overhead clearance
- Check clearance for doorways, pipes, sprinklers, and lights before raising or driving a high load.
- Stop for unsafe load
- If a load is unstable, too heavy, or off-center, do not move it — reposition, secure, or reduce it first.

- Sound the horn before moving from a stop and at every blind corner, doorway, and intersection.
