What Forklift Certification Is
A “forklift” is what OSHA calls a , and the rules that govern it live in 29 CFR 1910.178.[1] There is no single national forklift exam or passing score: paragraph (l) of the standard requires , , and a workplace , and then the employer certifies the operator. The single most useful thing to know before you study: forklift questions are almost all about preventing a tip-over or a struck-by injury. One naming note worth keeping straight: people say “forklift license,” but there is no government forklift license like a driver’s license. What the law requires is — training and a workplace evaluation specific to the truck type. 1.1 The OSHA Standard (29 CFR 1910.178)

1.2 The Three Parts of Operator Training
OSHA training has three required parts, and a question on this is almost guaranteed: (classroom, written material, or video covering the rules, the truck, and the workplace hazards), (trainer demonstrations plus trainee exercises operating the actual truck under direct supervision), and a workplace of the operator actually driving the truck.[4] A video alone — or a road test on public streets — never satisfies the rule.
Training must address both truck-related topics (operating instructions, stability, inspection, refueling) and workplace-related topics (surface conditions, pedestrian traffic, ramps, narrow aisles, hazardous areas). Only trained, evaluated, employer-certified operators may run a forklift; trainees may operate only under the direct supervision of a qualified trainer.

Know the machine before you drive it. This module covers the seven OSHA truck classes, the counterbalanced design that makes a forklift work (and tip), the data plate, and the protective components you are tested on.
2.1 The Seven Truck Classes
OSHA groups powered industrial trucks into seven classes.[2] You don’t need every model, but you should recognize the big distinctions: Class I and III are electric (riders and hand trucks), Class II is electric (reach trucks and order pickers), Class IV/V are internal-combustion (cushion vs. pneumatic tire), Class VI are tow tractors, and Class VII are trucks for construction.

2.2 Counterbalanced Design & the Data Plate
The most common forklift is the truck: the load rides on forks at the front, and a heavy at the rear balances it, pivoting on the front wheels like a seesaw. That design is exactly why overloading or carrying the load too far out can tip the truck forward.

Mast & carriage
The vertical assembly that raises, lowers, and tilts the forks; a pinch/crush hazard — keep body parts out.
Forks (tines)
The horizontal arms that carry the load; insert fully and center the load before lifting.
Counterweight
Heavy weight at the rear that balances the load on the forks — the basis of a counterbalanced truck.
Data (capacity) plate
States rated capacity at a load center, truck weight, fuel type, and attachments; must be legible.
Tilt cylinders
Tilt the mast forward to deposit a load and back to cradle it for safe travel.
Seat belt
Keeps the operator inside the overhead-guard zone during a tip-over — the survivable choice.

Module 3 · Stability, Load Capacity & the Stability Triangle
The single most important module — tip-overs kill more operators than anything else. This is the physics of staying upright: the stability triangle, the center of gravity, the load center and rated capacity, and what to do if the truck starts to go over.
3.1 The Stability Triangle
On a sit-down counterbalanced forklift, the two front wheels and the pivot point at the center of the rear steer axle form the .[2] The truck stays upright only while the combined of the truck and its load stays inside that triangle. Carrying the load low and tilted back keeps the center of gravity low and rearward; overloading, raising the load, or turning sharply pushes it toward an edge.
3.2 Load Center & Rated Capacity
The is the horizontal distance from the face of the forks to the load’s center of gravity, commonly rated at 24 inches. The data plate gives the truck’s at that load center. Most tip-overs are lateral (sideways) and most are caused by turning too fast, turning with a raised load, or traveling across a grade.[3] Prevention is simple to state: stay within rated capacity, carry the load low and tilted back, and slow down and lower the load before turning. A safe truck starts with a daily check. This module covers the start-of-shift pre-operation inspection, lead-acid battery charging and service, propane and fuel handling, and the carbon-monoxide hazard of internal-combustion trucks.
4.1 The Pre-Operation Inspection
OSHA requires a forklift to be examined at least daily, before each shift, before it is placed in service.[1] The operator checks fluids, tires, forks and chains, the mast and hydraulics, the horn, lights, the service and parking brakes, steering, the seat belt, the data plate, and the battery or fuel, and looks for leaks. If any safety defect is found — a brake that won’t hold, a dead horn, a hydraulic leak that lets the lift drift down — the truck is tagged and reported until repaired.
4.2 Battery Charging & Service
Electric forklifts run on a , and charging it releases , a flammable and explosive gas.[1] So OSHA requires charging in a designated, well-ventilated area with no open flames, smoking, or sparks. Servicing the battery also calls for face and eye protection and acid-resistant gloves, with an accessible eyewash station, because the sulfuric-acid electrolyte can cause chemical burns.
4.3 Fuel, LPG & Carbon Monoxide
Internal-combustion forklifts run on gasoline, diesel, or . When refueling propane, shut off the engine, work in ventilation away from ignition sources, secure the tank, and check for leaks — LPG is heavier than air and highly flammable.
And because engine exhaust contains , a colorless, odorless, toxic gas, running an internal-combustion truck indoors requires adequate ventilation and CO monitoring. Electric trucks, which produce no exhaust, are favored indoors for exactly this reason.

Where the rules meet the floor. This module covers safe load handling and traveling, ramp and grade rules, parking and shutdown, and the pedestrian-safety rules that prevent the second-leading cause of forklift deaths.
5.1 Load Handling & Traveling
Pick up a load correctly: center it on the forks, insert the forks fully beneath it, and tilt back slightly before lifting. Then travel with the load low — about 4 to 6 inches off the floor— tilted slightly back, at a safe speed for conditions. If the load blocks the forward view, travel in reverse, using a spotter when needed; never raise the load to see under it or lean out of the truck.
5.2 Ramps, Grades & Parking
On a ramp the : drive forward up a grade with the load upgrade, and drive in reverse down a grade with the load upgrade, so the load cannot slide forward off the forks. Never travel sideways across a grade. When you leave the truck — 25 feet or more away or out of view — fully lower the forks, neutralize the controls, set the parking brake, and shut off the power; for a brief stop within 25 feet and in view, just lower the forks and neutralize the controls.
- Loaded, going UP a grade. Drive forward, load pointed upgrade — the load stays on the high side.
- Loaded, going DOWN a grade. Drive in reverse, load pointed upgrade — so the load cannot slide forward off the forks.
- Carry the load low. Forks about 4–6 inches off the floor, tilted slightly back, for a low, stable center of gravity.
- Never travel sideways across a grade. Crossing a slope shifts the CG toward the downhill side and invites a lateral tip-over.
- Never raise the load to travel or turn. A raised load lifts the center of gravity; lower it and slow down before turning.
- Brief stop — within 25 ft and in view (dock stop). Fully lower the forks and neutralize the controls.
- Unattended — 25 ft or more away, or out of view. Lower the forks, neutralize controls, set the parking brake, AND shut off the power.
- Never leave it running with raised forks. Raised forks and a running engine create struck-by and runaway hazards.
- Never park on a ramp or block a fire aisle / exit. Park on level ground, clear of exits, doorways, and emergency equipment.
5.3 Pedestrian & Workplace Safety
Struck-by incidents are a leading cause of forklift deaths, so the rule is heavily tested: pedestrians have the right of way, and the operator must yield, slow down, and keep a safe distance.[3] At blind corners and intersections, slow down, sound the horn, and proceed only when clear. No riders are allowed on a truck not built to carry passengers, and a person may be lifted only on a securely attached, approved work platform with guardrails — never on bare forks or a loose pallet.
