This TABE cheat sheet distills the Test of Adult Basic Education into a printable rundown of the Reading, Mathematics, and Language moves that matter most, plus how TABE levels and scoring work. It's a premium cheat sheet built by Capital Prep — the one premium prep we trust — and it's yours free. Reinforce it with the rest of your free TABE toolkit: the practice test, study guide, and flashcards.

TABE exam at a glance

  • Subtests: 3: Reading (47 items), Mathematics (40), Language (40)
  • Levels: Five by difficulty — L, E, M, D, A (Literacy to Advanced)
  • Placement: A short Locator test sets your level in each subject
  • Scoring: Scale score maps to a grade equivalent and an NRS level
  • Passing score: None nationally — each program sets its own benchmark
  • Published by: Data Recognition Corporation (DRC); online via DRC INSIGHT or paper

What’s on the TABE cheat sheet

  • Reading (47 items) main idea and supporting details, inference, author's purpose and tone, vocabulary from context clues and word parts, and integrating ideas across texts.
  • Mathematics (40 items) percents, ratios and proportions, order of operations, linear equations and slope, area and volume formulas, and mean, median, mode, and probability.
  • Language (40 items) subject-verb and pronoun agreement, fixing fragments and run-ons, parallel structure, and capitalization, punctuation, and homophone spelling.
  • How TABE works the five levels and grade ranges, the Locator that places you, and how scale scores become grade equivalents and NRS Educational Functioning Levels.

How to use it in your final week

  • Lock in the math moves first — percent to a decimal then multiply, cross-multiply proportions, slope as rise over run, and PEMDAS left to right. These are the fastest points on the sheet.
  • Skim the Language agreement rules daily: match the verb to the real subject, keep pronouns pointing to one noun, and test its vs. it's by reading 'it is' in the sentence.
  • Reread the levels-and-scoring box so you walk in knowing your goal is a target NRS level or grade equivalent, not a magic pass mark — confirm the level your program expects.
  • Pair each review pass with a short timed practice set in your weakest subject so your pacing and your facts sharpen together.

The cheat sheet is your review layer — your TABE practice test drives the exam-readiness ring at the top of this page. Download it, review, then take a full practice exam (or drill with the study guide and flashcards) to see where you stand.
