You don’t aim for an “overall TABE score.” Instead, each subtest gives a scale score that becomes a and an NRS level.[4] Here’s how the five levels map to grade ranges:

Module 1 · Reading
Reading is the largest TABE subtest. Almost every question attaches to a passage — informational texts (workplace documents, science and history articles) and some literary passages. The skill being tested is reasoning with text, organized into four areas aligned to the College & Career Readiness Standards.[5]

1.1 Key Ideas & Details
Every reading question comes back to two skills: finding the and tracing the that develop it. From there, TABE pushes into — the logical conclusions you can draw from what is on the page — and summarizing a passage accurately.

The hardest Reading items ask you to evaluate and combineinformation: judge whether an argument’s evidence supports its claim, compare two passages on the same topic, or pull information from a chart or graphic that accompanies the text. This is higher-order reading that shows up most on the D and A levels.

Module 2 · Mathematics
TABE Mathematics is a single 40-item subtestcombining computation and applied problem-solving, aligned to the College & Career Readiness Standards.[5] It has a no-calculator section followed by a calculator section. Most questions are word problems set in real-life contexts — money, measurement, rates, and data — so the skill is translating words into math, then computing carefully. The four content strands below scale up in difficulty from level E through A.

TABE Language tests the conventions of standard written English — grammar, usage, sentence structure, and mechanics — mostly through editing tasks where you fix or improve a sentence, rather than answering isolated grammar trivia.[5] The high-yield rules below come up at every level.
3.1 Grammar, Usage & Agreement
The most-tested rules are and , plus correct and consistent verb tense and using the right word form. The classic trap: words between the subject and the verb that tempt you to match the wrong noun.

Mechanics round out the Language subtest: capitalizing proper nouns and sentence starts; commas, end punctuation, and the ; and spelling, including the homophones that trip up many writers. These rules are tested through editing, so train your eye to catch errors in real sentences.

4.1 The Five Levels & the Locator
TABE comes in five levels by difficulty: — from foundational literacy up to advanced, high-school-level work. You don’t choose your level blindly: a short samples your Reading, Math, and Language and recommends the right level for each subtest, so the questions are neither far too easy nor impossibly hard.

4.2 Scoring: Scale Scores, GE & NRS Levels
Each subtest produces a on one continuous vertical scale that lets scores be compared across all five levels and over time. That scale score is then translated into a (plain-language skill level) and into an used for placement and federal reporting.[4]

4.3 Test Day: Format & Timing
You take TABE online through DRC INSIGHT or on paper. Unlike the older TABE 9/10, TABE 11 & 12 has a single test length per subject— there is no longer a separate “Survey” versus “Complete Battery” choice.
On the Mathematics subtest, an early no-calculator section is followed by a calculator section (the calculator section starts at level M). Online testing also adds technology-enhanced items — drag-and-drop, multiple-select, and gridded responses.[2]
