Subtest I · Reading, Language & Literature and History & Social Science

Subtest I (code 101) — 52 multiple-choice + 4 constructed-response, 3 hours. Two domains: the literacy and language strand, and the history and social-science strand.

1.1 Reading, Language & Literature

Reading, Language and Literature is one half of CSET Subtest I (Test 101): 26 multiple-choice plus 2 constructed-response questions, scored 70 percent MC and 30 percent CRQ.[6] The single densest, most-tested cluster is early literacy, and the trap is that this section tests how to TEACH reading, not just your own comprehension.

Most items are definition-to-vocabulary matching: the stem describes a classroom activity and asks for the precise technical term. Master the jargon, especially the look-alike pairs ( vs , segmenting vs blending, vs ).

The five language systems (and why they matter)

Linguists describe language with five interlocking systems. The exam asks you to name which one a scenario illustrates, so learn the mnemonic Please May Susan See Pancakes (, , , , ).[6]

Morphology is high-yield: a is the smallest unit of meaning. Free morphemes stand alone (cat, run); bound morphemes cannot (the prefix un-, the suffix -ed). The word cats has two morphemes: cat plus the plural -s.

A pragmatics example: saying Can you pass the salt is grammatically a question but functions socially as a request. Recognizing intended social meaning, not literal form, is pragmatics.

Phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, and phonics

This is the densest tested cluster, and the three terms are deliberate look-alike traps. Phonological awareness is the broad umbrella: sensitivity to any sound unit, including rhyme, syllables, and .[14]

Phonemic awareness is the narrowest band of that umbrella: hearing and manipulating individual s (sounds) only. It is purely oral, with no print at all, often described as an eyes-closed skill.[14]

Phonics is different from both because it involves PRINT: it maps sounds to letters, the . If letters are involved, it is phonics, not phonemic awareness.

Phonemic awareness is the strongest single predictor of early reading success (cite Adams and Stanovich on the CRQ). The named assessment tool to memorize is the .

  • Onset-rime: in cat, the onset is /k/ and the rime is /at/ (a larger unit than a single phoneme).
  • Skill-difficulty order (easiest to hardest): rhyme/isolation, then blending, then segmenting, then deletion/manipulation.
  • Blending: combine /k/ /a/ /t/ to say cat. Segmenting: break cat into /k/ /a/ /t/.
  • Alphabetic principle: letters represent predictable, systematic sounds; it is the bridge from phonemic awareness into phonics and decoding.

Reading development: decoding, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension

Think of reading development as a rope of strands woven in sequence: phonemic awareness leads to , then , then vocabulary, then comprehension. A breakdown in any earlier strand limits comprehension.[14]

Decoding is sounding out print using sound-symbol relationships. Word recognition becomes automatic so attention is freed for meaning.

Fluency has exactly three indicators to memorize: accuracy, rate, and . Prosody is reading with expression and natural phrasing, and it is the most-tested of the three because candidates forget it.

  • Denotative meaning = the literal dictionary definition (home = a place where one lives).
  • Connotative meaning = the emotional or associative overtone (home implies warmth and belonging; house does not).
  • Contextual analysis = using surrounding words to infer an unknown word's meaning.
  • Comprehension strategies tested: predicting, questioning, summarizing, inferring, monitoring/clarifying, and activating prior (background) knowledge.

Literature: genres and literary devices

Genre questions span fiction (novels, short stories), folktales and fairy tales, myths, drama, and poetry, with special attention to children's literature and diverse cultures.[14] Theme is the central message or insight; is the narrative vantage (first person uses I, third-person omniscient knows all characters' thoughts).

The most-tested device distinction is versus . A simile compares using like or as (brave as a lion); a metaphor states the comparison directly with no like or as (he is a lion). This pair appears in both MC and the constructed response.

Word choice (diction) shapes (the author's attitude) and (the feeling created in the reader). A CRQ pattern asks you to analyze how a passage's metaphor produces its mood or tone.

Grammar, conventions, and the writing process

Conventions covers sentence structure, usage, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.[14] Know sentence types by clause structure: a simple sentence has one independent clause; compound joins two independent clauses (often with a comma plus and/but/or); complex joins an independent clause with a dependent clause.

Writing is taught as a recursive , not a single draft. The CRQ may ask you to identify writer techniques in a persuasive essay or to analyze a student's spelling errors as a phonics or morphology diagnostic.

The three core genres of composition are arguments (a claim backed by valid reasoning and sufficient evidence), informative/explanatory texts (including business letters and job applications), and narratives (real or imagined events with descriptive detail and a clear sequence).

Language acquisition and text complexity

Distinguish first-language development from second-language (L2) acquisition. Interlanguage is a normal developmental stage where an L2 learner's errors reflect first-language transfer; do not mistake typical L2 features for a learning disability.

Text complexity is evaluated three ways, and naming the right one is a common trap. Quantitative measures are computer-scored (word length, sentence length, readability formulas). Qualitative dimensions require human judgment (levels of meaning, structure, language clarity, knowledge demands).[14]

The third factor is reader and task: matching a text to a specific reader's background, motivation, and skill, and to the purpose of the assignment. A question that asks about a reader's motivation is pointing to reader-and-task, not the quantitative score.

1.2 History & Social Science

History and Social Science is the second half of CSET Subtest I, worth 26 multiple-choice questions and 2 constructed-response questions (CRQs) alongside Reading, Language and Literature. The official content is organized into three Subject Matter Requirement domains: World History, United States History, and California History, plus a Part II skills section covering geography, civics, economics, and source analysis.[6]

The hidden trap is breadth: candidates underprepare because it is only part of one subtest, then face questions spanning the ancient world through modern California. This guide teaches the highest-yield eras, figures, dates, and concepts so you can earn points fast and write CRQs as a teacher.[5]

World History: Ancient Civilizations and the European Pivot

Ancient civilizations are the single biggest world-history chunk on the exam. The core idea tested is that drove civilization: reliable water plus arable soil created farming surpluses, which freed people to build cities, specialize in trades, and invent writing.[22]

Memorize the eight named civilizations and one signature contribution each. Rome appears most often, and its decline is a favorite item: political instability, reliance on mercenaries, and overexpansion all weakened the Western Empire.

After Rome fell, arose in both medieval Europe and Japan, a frequently tested parallel where land was exchanged for military service in a strict social hierarchy. Islam (founded in Arabia) and Christianity both spread widely, carrying trade and learning across continents.[22]

Part II tests political science as definition-to-vocabulary matching: a scenario describes a system, and you pick its label. Drill the forms of government and the core ideas behind American democracy rather than memorizing trivia.[23]

Citizenship has both rights (voting, free speech, due process) and responsibilities (obeying laws, serving on juries, paying taxes, staying informed). Expect questions on how citizens participate through the three branches.[22]

The exam rewards breadth, not depth, and loves misconception traps. This guide teaches the highest-yield ideas that appear on the official released items, so reading it should genuinely move you toward the 220 passing score.[12]

Physical Science: Matter, Change, and Reactions

Matter is made of . A nucleus of protons (positive) and neutrons (neutral) is orbited by electrons (negative). The organizes elements by atomic number and groups elements with similar chemical properties into columns.[25]

Learn the physical-versus-chemical change rule cold, because it is a released item. A alters form or state but keeps the same substance (boiling, grinding, dissolving, freezing). A rearranges atoms into a new substance (burning, rusting, digestion).[12]

Physical Science: Motion, Forces, Energy, and Heat

Life Science: Genetics and Evolution (the Lamarck Trap)

Know the precise vocabulary, since the exam maps everyday ideas to jargon. An is what you sense; an is a conclusion drawn from observations; a prediction forecasts a future result; a is a testable proposed explanation.[26]

A is a broad, well-supported explanation (evolution, plate tectonics); a describes a consistent pattern (gravity). A theory is not a guess and does not graduate into a law; they answer different questions.[26]
