This DAT cheat sheet distills the Dental Admission Test into a printable rundown of the facts admissions committees weigh most — across the sciences, the PAT, reading, and quant. It's a premium cheat sheet built by Capital Prep — the one premium prep we trust — and it's yours free. Reinforce it with the rest of your free DAT toolkit: the practice test, study guide, and flashcards.

DAT exam at a glance

  • Sections: 4 — Natural Sciences, PAT, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Reasoning
  • Questions: 280 multiple-choice
  • Testing time: 4 hours 15 minutes (about 5h 15m total appointment)
  • Scoring: 200–600 scaled score, 10-point steps (no pass/fail; new since March 1, 2025)
  • National average: ≈400 Academic Average (about the 50th percentile); 420+ is competitive
  • Cost: $580 in 2026 (verify the current fee in the ADA DAT Candidate Guide)

What’s on the DAT cheat sheet

  • Survey of the Natural Sciences (100 items / 90 min) Biology 40, General Chemistry 30, Organic Chemistry 30 — the highest-weight block and the one to build first.
  • Perceptual Ability Test (90 items / 60 min) six spatial subtests — apertures, view recognition, angle ranking, paper folding, cube counting, 3D form — scored separately from the Academic Average.
  • Reading Comprehension (50 items / 60 min) three science passages answered only from the text — detail, main idea, inference, tone, and vocabulary in context.
  • Quantitative Reasoning (40 items / 45 min) arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trig, and probability with an on-screen four-function calculator.

How to use it in your final week

  • Do a fast pass over the Survey of the Natural Sciences facts every morning — it carries the most weight on your Academic Average, so keep Biology, General Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry recall warm.
  • Drill the PAT quick-reference daily (keyholes, hole punching, cube counting) — it is the most trainable section and a strong score offsets a softer science block in a school's eyes.
  • Memorize the pacing off the sheet: ~54 sec/item on the sciences, ~40 sec on the PAT, ~72 sec on reading, ~67 sec on quant — and never leave a blank, since there is no guessing penalty.
  • Pair each review pass with a short timed practice set so the 4-hour-15-minute clock feels routine before you sit at Prometric.

The cheat sheet is your review layer — your DAT practice test drives the exam-readiness ring at the top of this page. Download it, review, then take a full practice exam (or drill with the study guide and flashcards) to see where you stand.
