ASE G1 exam at a glance

  • Time: 90 minutes
  • Result: Pass/Fail, with a per-content-area performance breakdown
  • Cost: $34 registration per order + $62 per general test (verify at ase.com)
  • Experience: 2 years of relevant hands-on work experience, or 1 year plus a qualifying two-year degree

What’s on the ASE G1 cheat sheet

  • Suspension & Steering (24%) wheel alignment angles, tire wear pattern → root cause diagnosis, shocks & struts.
  • Brakes (20%) hydraulic diagnosis by pedal feel, brake fluid, disc brakes.
  • Engine Systems (16%) oil & filter service, cooling system, belts & hoses.
  • Electrical (15%) battery service, charging system, starting system.
  • Manual Drive Train & Axles (11%) clutch, manual gearbox, bearings.
  • Automatic Transmission / Transaxle (7%) fluid FIRST, ATF condition, correct fluid.
  • Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (7%) A/C operation, refrigerant handling, poor cooling.

How to use it in your final week

  • Front-load Suspension & Steering — at None of the 55 scored questions it is about 24% of the test on its own, so if you master one section from the sheet, make it this one.
  • Then work Brakes (None of 55) — the sheet leads there with hydraulic diagnosis by pedal feel.
  • Then work Engine Systems (None of 55) — the sheet leads there with oil & filter service.
  • Drill the reversal traps until they are reflex — the most commonly flipped one on this test is sidewall pressure is the MAXIMUM, not the recommended.
  • Read the sheet the morning of your appointment for a last pass on the memory hooks, then answer every one of the 65 questions — 10 are unscored research items and you are not told which.

The cheat sheet is your review layer — your ASE G1 practice test drives the exam-readiness ring at the top of this page. Download it, review, then take a full practice exam (or drill with the study guide and flashcards) to see where you stand.
