ACCUPLACER exam at a glance

  • Publisher: The College Board (also makes the SAT and AP)
  • Tests: Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, QAS, and AAF, plus the WritePlacer essay
  • Questions: Reading 20 · Writing 25 · Arithmetic 20 · QAS 20 · AAF 20
  • Score scale: 200–300 per multiple-choice test; WritePlacer essay scored 1–8
  • Format & time: Computer-adaptive multiple choice plus essay; untimed (a full battery is about 2–2.5 hours)
  • Placement, not pass/fail: No universal passing score — each college sets its own cut scores; aim high to place into credit-bearing courses
  • Cost: Set by your college or testing center; often free or a modest fee for incoming students

What’s on the ACCUPLACER cheat sheet

  • Reading (20 questions) comprehension and main ideas, vocabulary in context, and inference and synthesis across single and paired passages.
  • Writing (25 questions) expression of ideas and standard English conventions — revisions embedded in multiparagraph drafts, not isolated grammar trivia.
  • Arithmetic (20 questions) whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percent, and number comparisons and equivalents — the base the two higher math tests build on.
  • QAS (20 questions) Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra and Statistics — ratios, exponents, linear equations, probability, descriptive statistics, and geometry concepts.
  • AAF (20 questions) Advanced Algebra and Functions — factoring, quadratics, functions, radicals, logarithms, and trigonometry for STEM-bound placement.
  • WritePlacer essay (scored 1–8) a written response graded on six criteria: purpose and focus, organization, development, sentence variety, mechanics, and critical thinking.

How to use it in your final week

  • Confirm which tests your college actually assigns, then focus your final-week review on just those sections of the sheet — most students only take one reading/writing test plus one math test.
  • Drill the math rules cold: percent-as-decimal, slope = rise/run, the quadratic formula, and SOH-CAH-TOA for AAF. Since the tests are adaptive and you can't go back, a shaky early answer drops you to easier questions and lowers placement.
  • Read the score-scale line the morning you test — 200–300 per multiple-choice test, WritePlacer 1–8 — and remind yourself to aim high, because a stronger score can skip a semester of developmental coursework.
  • Pair each review pass with a short practice set so the untimed, computer-adaptive format feels familiar before you sit down.

The cheat sheet is your review layer — your ACCUPLACER practice test drives the exam-readiness ring at the top of this page. Download it, review, then take a full practice exam (or drill with the study guide and flashcards) to see where you stand.
