The most important thing to understand is what the OLSAT is not: it is not an achievement test of facts learned in a grade. It is a reasoning test — “a general ability indicator” that “projects how well the student is able to learn.”[1] That is why programs use it to spot students ready for advanced instruction.
Every OLSAT question belongs to one of five reasoning areas, which roll up into a Verbal cluster and a Nonverbal cluster. The test reports a Total score (the SAI) plus a separate Verbal and Nonverbal score. Pictorial Reasoning appears only on the lower levels (grades K–2).

This guide teaches all five areas, grouped into four study modulesthat match the four kinds of questions you’ll practice: Verbal Comprehension and Verbal Reasoning (the Verbal cluster), then Figural & Pictorial Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning (the Nonverbal cluster). The Verbal and Nonverbal items are split roughly evenly on most levels:
On most levels the OLSAT is built with about half verbal and half nonverbal items, so a strong score needs both language reasoning and picture/number reasoning.[2] Reporting the two clusters separately is useful: a child still building English vocabulary can show high reasoning ability through the Nonverbal score.
The OLSAT has seven grade-based levels so each child gets an age-appropriate form. The youngest levels are read aloud because the students are not yet fluent readers.
1 · Verbal Comprehension
Verbal Comprehension is about understanding language. Its four item types — Following Directions, Antonyms, Sentence Completion, and Sentence Arrangement — test whether a child grasps word meanings and how sentences fit together.[2]The formats below cover almost every Verbal Comprehension item you’ll see.
Antonyms & word meaning
An item asks for the word that means the opposite of a given word. The skill is to decide what the opposite should be before reading the choices, then rule out and unrelated words. The near-synonym is the classic trap.

Sentence completion & following directions
A sentence-completion item gives a sentence with a missing word; you pick the choice that fits both the meaning and the grammar. Read the whole sentence and predict the word first — the surrounding words are context clues. Following-directions items ask a child to listen to or read instructions and mark the answer that follows them exactly, rewarding careful attention.
Sentence arrangement
Sentence-arrangement items scramble the words of a sentence and ask the child to reorder them (or to pick the word that should come first). Anchor on the subject and verb, then build the rest of the sentence around them; the small connecting words fall into place last.

2 · Verbal Reasoning
Verbal Reasoning is about thinking with language, not just understanding it. Its seven item types — aural reasoning, arithmetic reasoning, logical selection, the word/letter matrix, verbal analogies, verbal classification, and inference — ask a child to find relationships and draw conclusions.[2] These items are the heart of the OLSAT.
Verbal analogies & classification
A takes the form A is to B as C is to ? Name the relationship in the first pair, then apply the very same relationship to the second pair before you look at the choices.
An analogy reads A is to B as C is to ? Say the link in the first pair as a short sentence, then carry that exact link to the second pair before you look at the choices.
The trap is a word that’s topically related but breaks the relationship. Only the choice that fits the exact link you named is correct.

A item asks which word does not belong: in maple, oak, pine, granite, three are trees and granite is a rock, so granite is the odd one out. Name the shared category of three words, and the outlier becomes obvious.
Logical selection & inference
A item asks which property must always be true of something — every island must have water all around it; it need not have palm trees. An item gives facts assumed true and asks what follows. The discipline is to accept only what the statements prove.
Arithmetic & aural reasoning
Arithmetic reasoning items are word problems you translate into a quick calculation — they sit in Verbal Reasoning because the challenge is reasoning about a situation, not heavy computation. Aural reasoning items (common on lower levels) read a short scenario aloud and ask the child to reason to a conclusion.

Figural classification & analogies
A figural classification item shows several figures and asks for the odd one out — the one that breaks a shared property (shape, shading, size, orientation, or number of parts). A reads figure A is to figure B as figure C is to ? — spot the single change from A to B, then apply it to C.

Pattern matrices
A is a 3-by-3 grid of figures with one empty cell. Read how the figures change across each row and down each column, then find the figure that satisfies both directions at once. Solve one direction first, then use the other to confirm a single answer.
Figural series
A shows a row of pictures that change step by step. Find what changes — the count of parts, a rotation, the shading, or the size — then continue that exact change one more step. If a shape has 1, 3, 5, then 7 holes, the next has 9 holes.

4 · Quantitative Reasoning
Quantitative Reasoning reasons with numbers. Its three item types — Number Series, Numeric Inference, and Number Matrix — ask a child to find a hidden numerical rule and extend it.[2] These items reward pattern-finding and clean mental math, not heavy computation.

A follows a hidden rule and asks for the next term. Test for a constant difference (an ) first, then a constant multiplier (a ); if neither fits, look for a growing gap, square numbers, or a two-step rule.

OLSAT Scores Explained (SAI)
The OLSAT’s main result is the — an age-based standard score normalized to a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 16.[3] Because a child is compared to others the same age(not grade), a younger student in a grade isn’t penalized for being young. The OLSAT reports a Total SAI plus separate and scores.
The SAI is an age-based standard score. Because its standard deviation is 16 (not the more common 15), an SAI of 116 sits one SD above average and 132 sits two SDs above. The percentile ranges below are approximate; gifted cutoffs are set by each district, not by Pearson.
An SAI of 100is exactly average for a child’s age. Many gifted programs look for roughly the 95th–98th percentile, but every district sets its own cutoff.
Alongside the SAI, the OLSAT reports a , a (1–9), and a .[1] There is no pass or fail: the OLSAT is a that shows where a child ranks among peers. Whether a score qualifies for a gifted program depends on each district’s cutoff — often around the 95th–98th percentile, but set locally, and usually combined with other measures.

- An item asking which property must always be true of something — a forest must always have trees, but need not have a river.
- Nonverbal cluster
- One of the OLSAT's two score clusters; it combines the Pictorial Reasoning (lower levels), Figural Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning areas — items built from pictures, shapes, and numbers.
- Norm-referenced test
- A test scored by comparing a student to a representative sample of peers, rather than against a fixed passing mark. The OLSAT is norm-referenced.
- Normal Curve Equivalent (NCE)
- A normalized score from 1 to 99 (mean 50) with equal intervals, useful for comparing or averaging scores — reported by the OLSAT.
- Number series
- A row of numbers that follows a hidden rule; you find the rule and give the next term (4, 8, 12, 16 → 20).
- Numeric inference
- A quantitative item giving number pairs or groups that share a hidden rule; you find the rule and supply the missing value.
- OLSAT

- Stanine
