Unit 1 · Anatomy & Physiology
26 of 200 questions — the lightest unit. It’s the science floor for everything else: how muscle fibers work, how the body makes energy, and the hormones that drive adaptation. Don’t over-invest here — it’s smaller than candidates expect.
1.1 Muscle Fiber Types
Skeletal muscle has two main fiber types. The exam wants you to match a fiber type to the activity it suits:

1.2 The Three Energy Systems
The body makes ATP (its energy currency) through three systems that all run at once — the duration and intensity of the activity decide which one dominates.[7]
ATP-PC (Phosphagen)
- Duration: ~0–10 seconds
- Fuel: stored ATP + creatine phosphate
- Use: maximal, explosive effort (a 1RM, a short sprint, a jump)
- Oxygen: none needed (anaerobic)
Glycolytic (Anaerobic)
- Duration: ~10 s–2 minutes
- Fuel: glucose / glycogen
- Use: high-intensity work (a hard set, a 400 m run)
- Byproduct: lactate / H⁺ (the muscular 'burn')
Oxidative (Aerobic)
- Duration: 2+ minutes (sustained)
- Fuel: carbohydrate + fat (protein last)
- Use: low-to-moderate, long-duration work (steady cardio)
- Oxygen: required (aerobic)
1.3 Hormones & the All-or-None Principle
A few endocrine facts recur. Testosterone is the key anabolic (muscle-building) hormone the exam asks about; growth hormone and insulin-like growth factor also support growth, while cortisol is catabolic. Watch a poorly-worded insulin distractor — insulin is technically anabolic too, but the keyed answer for “the anabolic hormone for muscle” is testosterone.

2.3 Planes of Motion & Joints
Movement is described in three planes of motion: the (forward/back — a squat or curl), the (side-to-side — a lateral raise), and the (rotation — a trunk twist, dividing the body into superior and inferior). Joints are classified too — the atlantoaxial joint (C1–C2) is a pivot joint that allows the head to rotate.
One more mechanics fact: when a muscle contracts, it draws its insertion toward its origin — origin is the fixed (usually proximal) attachment, insertion the moving (usually distal) one.

3.1 The 5 Health-Related Components

- Muscular endurance — The ability to repeat or sustain a sub-maximal contraction over time (e.g. a push-up test).
- Flexibility — The range of motion available at a joint or series of joints (e.g. the sit-and-reach).
- Body composition — The ratio of fat mass to fat-free mass — the two-component body-composition model.

3.2 Body Composition & Assessment
uses the two-component model — fat mass plus fat-free mass. Skinfold calipers estimate body fat, and technique matters: holding the caliper too long compresses the tissue, giving a falsely LOW reading (an easy direction to invert on the exam).
3.3 VO₂max, HR & Blood Pressure
is the gold-standard measure of cardiorespiratory fitness; its central limiting factor is cardiac output (peripheral factors like the a-vO₂ difference are distractors when the stem asks for the central determinant).[7] Use the current ACC/AHA blood-pressure categories — a systolic of 120–129 mmHg is “Elevated,” not Normal and not Stage 1.[12]

4.3 Hydration & Supplements
Match fluid intake to losses. 5.3 Periodization, Taper & Maintenance

Eligibility is straightforward: you must be 18+, hold a high school diploma or GED, and have a current before you sit for the exam.[6] The credential renews every two years with 20 and a current CPR/AED; the $99 renewal fee is waived if all 20 CEUs are earned through ISSA.[1]If you don’t pass, you get 2 free attempts with no waiting period, then $99 per retake.[3]

- Agonist

- Antagonist

- Basal metabolic rate (BMR)

- Body composition

- CEU

- Energy balance

- The nine amino acids the body cannot synthesize and must obtain from the diet. A protein with all nine is a 'complete' protein.
- First-class lever
- A lever with the fulcrum located between the effort and the resistance (like a seesaw or triceps extension at the elbow).
- FITT
- Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type — the four variables used to describe and prescribe an exercise program.
- Frontal plane
- The plane that divides the body into front and back halves; side-to-side movements (lateral raises) occur here.
- Glycemic index (GI)
- A ranking of how quickly a carbohydrate raises blood glucose. Riper or more processed foods tend to have a higher GI.

- Hyponatremia
- A dangerously low blood-sodium level that can result from overhydration diluting sodium — the reason 'more water' is not always safer.
- Karvonen formula

- Linear periodization
- A periodization model in which intensity rises while volume falls over successive training phases.
