The most important thing to understand about the ASVAB is that not every subtest counts the same. Four subtests feed your — the score that decides whether you can enlist at all — while the other six feed the that qualify you for specific jobs.[4] So spend your first and best effort on the four AFQT subtests:

Because is counted twice in AFQT = 2×VE + AR + MK, vocabulary and reading carry the most weight of any content on the test.[4] This guide teaches all 10 subtests, grouped into four study areas— Verbal and Math (your AFQT) first, then Science & Technical and Spatial for job line scores.

How the AFQT score is calculated

Only four of the ten subtests feed the AFQT — the score services use to decide eligibility. The formula is AFQT = 2×VE + AR + MK.

  1. Step 1 — Verbal Expression (VE)Add your Word Knowledge (WK) and Paragraph Comprehension (PC) results, then convert them to a single VE score.
  2. Step 2 — Double the verbalMultiply VE by 2. Verbal counts twice, so vocabulary and reading carry the most weight.
  3. Step 3 — Add the mathAdd Arithmetic Reasoning (AR) and Mathematics Knowledge (MK): raw AFQT = 2×VE + AR + MK.
  4. Step 4 — Convert to a percentileThe raw score becomes a 1–99 percentile versus a national reference group of 18–23-year-olds.

Your AFQT is reported as a percentile from 1 to 99 — a 50 means you scored as well as or better than about half of the reference group.

On the computer , Auto and Shop are separate subtests; on the paper they are combined into one Auto & Shop subtest, and each subtest has more questions. Exact counts and times vary slightly because the computer version mixes in unscored tryout items.[2]

1 · Verbal — Word Knowledge & Paragraph Comprehension

Verbal Expression is counted twice in your AFQT, so these two subtests are the single biggest lever on your enlistment score.[4] Word Knowledge tests vocabulary; Paragraph Comprehension tests reading.

Word Knowledge (WK)

asks for the synonym of a word, or the meaning of a word used in a sentence. When you don’t know a word, break it into its roots, prefixes, and suffixes and use any sentence context to estimate its meaning, then pick the closest choice.

Paragraph Comprehension (PC)

gives short passages and asks for the , a specific detail, an , the author’s purpose, or a word’s meaning in context. Answer only from the passage — never from outside knowledge.

Both math subtests feed your AFQT. Arithmetic Reasoning is math word problems; Mathematics Knowledge is math concepts (algebra and geometry). Get fluent here and you lift half of the score that decides enlistment.[4]

Arithmetic Reasoning (AR)

turns real situations into math. The skill is translation: name what’s asked, label the numbers, set up the right relationship, then solve and check the units.

These subtests don’t affect your AFQT, but they decide your job options. General Science, Electronics, Auto, Shop, and Mechanical Comprehension feed the line scores that qualify you for technical and mechanical military jobs.[4]

General Science (GS)

spans life science (cells, genetics, the human body, ecology), physical science (chemistry basics, energy, and physics like ), and earth and space science. It rewards broad recall of high-school science.

Electronics Information (EI)

centers on — voltage, current, and resistance — plus circuits and components. Master the triangle and you can answer most numeric EI items:

Cover the quantity you want with your finger: V is on top (so I and R multiply), I and R sit side by side under it (so you divide). V is volts, I is amps (current), R is ohms (resistance).

Auto & Shop Information (AI / SI)

covers automotive systems and shop tools. On the computer ASVAB these are two subtests (Auto Information and Shop Information) that combine into one AS score; on paper they are a single subtest.

Mechanical Comprehension (MC)

tests how machines and forces work — levers, pulleys, gears, fluids, and the idea of . The key principle: a machine can trade force for distance, but never gives you both for free.

4 · Spatial — Assembling Objects

Assembling Objects measures spatial visualizationand feeds line scores for some technical and mechanical jobs. It does not affect your AFQT, but it’s worth practicing because it’s unfamiliar to most test-takers.[1]

Assembling Objects (AO)

has two question types. Connector questions show shapes with labeled points and ask which picture connects them correctly. Puzzle questions show scattered pieces and ask which choice shows them assembled into a whole.

What ASVAB Score Do You Need?

Your is reported as a and sorted into Department of Defense categories. Most branches require roughly a 31 or higher with a high-school diploma, though the exact minimum varies by service and competitive jobs want more:

Most branches require roughly a 31 or higher (Category IIIB) with a high-school diploma — but competitive jobs and some branches want 50+. Higher is always better.

Quick definitions for the terms you’ll see most across the ASVAB:

AFQT
The Armed Forces Qualification Test — a percentile score (1–99) drawn from four ASVAB subtests (AR, MK, WK, PC) that decides whether you can enlist. It is computed as 2×VE + AR + MK.
Arithmetic Reasoning (AR)
The ASVAB subtest of math word problems — rates, ratios, percentages, and similar real-world calculations. It feeds your AFQT.
Assembling Objects (AO)
The ASVAB subtest measuring spatial visualization — fitting pieces together (puzzles) and matching labeled points on shapes (connectors). It does not affect the AFQT.
ASVAB
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery — a multiple-aptitude test the U.S. military uses to determine enlistment eligibility and qualify recruits for specific military jobs.
Auto & Shop Information (AS)
The ASVAB area covering automotive systems and shop tools and processes. The computer ASVAB splits it into separate Auto (AI) and Shop (SI) subtests that combine into one AS score.
CAT-ASVAB
The computer-adaptive version of the ASVAB given at Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS). It adjusts question difficulty to your ability and is the current standard format.
Electronics Information (EI)
The ASVAB subtest covering electricity and electronics — circuits, current, voltage, resistance, and components, anchored by Ohm's law.
General Science (GS)
The ASVAB subtest covering life science, physical science (physics and chemistry basics), and earth and space science.
Inference
A conclusion a passage supports but does not state directly. The correct inference on Paragraph Comprehension is the one the text most strongly implies.
Line score
A composite of subtest standard scores that each service uses to qualify you for specific jobs — for example the Army's GT (General Technical) or the Air Force's MAGE composites.
Main idea
The single point a paragraph is making — broader than any one detail, but never beyond what the passage actually says.
Mathematics Knowledge (MK)
The ASVAB subtest of math concepts — algebra, geometry, exponents, and number properties, presented as direct problems rather than word problems. It feeds your AFQT.
Mechanical advantage
How much a simple machine multiplies your force. For a lever it equals the effort arm divided by the load arm — more advantage means less force but more distance.
Mechanical Comprehension (MC)
The ASVAB subtest covering mechanical principles — levers, pulleys, gears, fluid dynamics, and basic forces.
MEPS
Military Entrance Processing Station — where applicants take the computer ASVAB and complete enlistment processing.
Newton's first law
The law of inertia: an object stays at rest or moving at a constant velocity unless an unbalanced force acts on it.
Newton's second law
Force equals mass times acceleration (F = ma): a larger force on the same mass produces greater acceleration.
Ohm's law
The core electronics rule that voltage equals current times resistance: V = I × R. Rearranged, I = V ÷ R and R = V ÷ I.
P&P-ASVAB
The paper-and-pencil version of the ASVAB given at Mobile Examination Test (MET) sites. It has fixed questions and more items per subtest than the computer version.
Paragraph Comprehension (PC)
The ASVAB subtest that measures reading comprehension — main idea, detail, inference, and vocabulary in context from short passages. It feeds your AFQT.
Percentile
A ranking from 1 to 99 showing the percentage of a reference group you scored as well as or better than. An AFQT of 60 means you scored at least as high as about 60% of that group.
Slope
The steepness of a line: the change in y divided by the change in x (rise over run). In y = mx + b, the slope is m.
Standard score
A subtest score scaled to a mean of 50 and a standard deviation of 10, so a 50 is average and a 60 is one standard deviation above average. Line scores are built from standard scores.
Verbal Expression (VE)
A combined verbal score formed from your Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension results. The AFQT counts VE twice, so verbal skills carry the most weight.
Word Knowledge (WK)
The ASVAB subtest that measures vocabulary — choosing the synonym of a word or the meaning of a word used in a sentence. It feeds your AFQT.
