The PERT (Postsecondary Education Readiness Test) is Florida’s common placement test, administered by the Florida Department of Education and used by Florida College System schools to place students into the right Math and English courses.[1]

It is broad rather than tricky — three sections of high-school-level skills — so the best preparation is realistic, section-by-section practice. That is exactly what these free PERT practice tests are built for.[6]

PERT at a Glance

Each PERT section has 30 questions (25 scored plus 5 unscored field-test items) and is computer-adaptive and untimed.[2] Here are the key facts your practice should mirror:

What Is on the PERT?

The PERT has three separately scored sections — Mathematics, Reading, and Writing — each with 30 questions and reported on the same 50–150 scale.[3] Each section maps to a course-placement level.

Practice the PERT by Section

Take the full test from the Start Test button above, or target one section at a time with the drills below. Each section drill pulls from a deep bank of realistic, explained questions.

PERT Math Practice Test

The PERT Math section covers equations and inequalities, polynomial expressions and operations, coordinate geometry, and applied word problems.[2] The math runs through intermediate algebra, and your score decides whether you place into intermediate algebra or college-level algebra.

Use the Math drill to build speed and accuracy on linear and quadratic equations, factoring, slope and lines, and percent and ratio problems — the question types that decide your placement.

PERT Reading Practice Test

The PERT Reading section measures main idea, supporting details, vocabulary in context, inferences and conclusions, author’s purpose and tone, and text structure.[2] Answers come directly from short passages.

Use the Reading drill to practice close, careful reading — finding the stated and implied main idea and drawing logical conclusions under exam conditions.

PERT Writing Practice Test

The PERT Writing section covers conventions of standard English — grammar and usage, sentence structure, and punctuation — plus rhetorical skills like word choice, transitions, and organization.[2]

Use the Writing drill to lock in subject-verb agreement, sentence correction, and the revision skills that recur throughout the section.

How Is the PERT Scored?

Each PERT section is scored separately on a 50–150 scale.[4] Only the 25 operational questions per section count; the 5 field-test items are mixed in and do not affect your result.

Because the test is computer-adaptive, the questions adjust to your performance as you go. Your score maps to a specific course placement rather than a simple pass or fail.

What Score Do You Need on the PERT?

The PERT is a placement test, so there is no single passing score.[5] In Math, roughly 114+ places you into college-level algebra (MAC 1105), with about 113 for intermediate algebra.

For English, the common college-ready cuts are about 106 for Reading and 103 for Writing, though exact cut scores vary by Florida college. Always confirm your school’s chart.

The takeaway: find your college’s required placement scores, then practice each section until you are consistently above them — with a buffer. Drilling your weakest section moves your placement the most.

What to Expect on Test Day

You take the PERT at a Florida college testing center (or an approved proctored setting). Bring a valid photo ID and arrive early; personal items and phones are stored away from your station.

Because the test is untimed and adaptive, there is no clock pressure — but each question adjusts to your answers, so read carefully and do your best on every item.

Simulating each section with the practice tests below makes the real format feel routine.

How to Use This PERT Practice Test

The PERT rewards broad review plus targeted section work. Get the most from these practice tests with these tips:

  • Diagnose, then drill. Take a full test first to find your weakest section, then drill it until it improves.
  • Work math by hand. A calculator is only available on some items — practice the arithmetic and algebra without one.
  • Read every explanation. Understanding why an answer is right beats memorizing — it transfers to new questions.
  • Aim above your college’s cut score. Build a buffer so you place into the course you want with room to spare.
  • Practice close reading. On Reading, base every answer on the passage, not outside knowledge.

Conclusion

Placing into the courses you want comes down to realistic, section-by-section practice. Take the full test to find your weak spots, drill Math, Reading, and Writing until each clears your college’s placement score, and build a comfortable buffer.

These free PERT practice tests are how you get there.

PERT Practice Test FAQ

Each PERT subtest — Mathematics, Reading, and Writing — has 30 questions: 25 operational (scored) items plus 5 unscored field-test items. The test is computer-adaptive and untimed, so you can take as long as you need on each section.
