Every card is drawn from the three CogAT batteries and the scoring system, so you study exactly what the test measures.[1] Pair them with our free practice test and study guide.

CogAT Flashcard Study Modes

Most flashcard sites give you one thing: a card to flip. Ours has four modes so a student can both learn the material and prove they actually know it — the difference between recognizing an answer and recalling it on test day.[3]

  • Flip (Study) — the classic card. Flip term ↔ definition, shuffle the deck, and mark each “Got it” or “Still learning.”
  • Match (Game) — a timed game: pair each term to its definition as fast as you can. Great for cementing subtest names and reasoning rules.
  • Type (Recall) — read the definition and type the term. Typing forces true active recall instead of passive recognition.
  • Quiz (Test) — multiple-choice questions generated from the cards, so you can self-test exactly like test day.

Why Flashcards Work for the CogAT

Flashcards aren’t busywork — they’re built on active recall: pulling an answer out of memory strengthens it far more than re-reading notes. Pair that with spacing — short sessions across several weeks rather than one cram — and a student retains more in less time.[3]

That matters for the CogAT, where comfort with the nine subtest formats and the reasoning rules is what lets a student show true ability.[1] Used alongside our practice test and study guide, flashcards turn review time into measurable progress.

CogAT Flashcards by Battery

The cards are organized by the three CogAT batteries plus a scoring deck. The three batteries are weighted roughly evenly, so study across all of them — a single weak battery pulls down the composite that gifted programs look at:[1]

CogAT flashcards by battery (2026)
Battery / deckWhat the cards coverReasoning measured
Verbal BatteryVerbal Analogies, Sentence Completion, Verbal Classification, vocabularyWords & meaning
Quantitative BatteryNumber Analogies, Number Puzzles, Number Series, sequence rulesNumbers & relationships
Nonverbal BatteryFigure Matrices, Paper Folding, Figure ClassificationShapes & patterns
Scoring & ProfileUSS, SAS, percentile rank, stanine, Ability Profile, levelsHow to read a score report

How to Get the Most Out of These Flashcards

  • Cover all three batteries. They’re weighted evenly, so don’t neglect the one that feels least familiar.[1]
  • Use Type and Quiz, not just Flip. Recognizing the answer is easy; recalling and choosing it fast is the real test.
  • Drill the recurring rules. Analogy relationships, number-series patterns, and the paper-folding hole rule repeat — make them automatic.
  • Learn the score language. SAS, percentile, stanine, and the Ability Profile help families read the report — lock them in.
  • Then prove it. When the cards feel easy, confirm with a full practice test.
