Nail Technician exam at a glance

  • Questions: ~100 scored multiple-choice, computer-based (plus possible unscored pretest items; varies by state)
  • Time: About 90 minutes for the NIC nail technology theory exam
  • Passing score: Scaled score; 75.00 generally required to pass (reported PASS/FAIL; varies by state)
  • Cost & training: Exam fees and required school hours vary by state (often roughly 300-600 hours); a practical exam is also required in most states

What’s on the Nail Technician cheat sheet

  • Infection Control & Safety (≈15%) the three decontamination levels, clean-before-disinfect, single-use vs. multi-use implements, and the blood-exposure response under Standard Precautions.
  • Anatomy & Physiology (≈15%) the nail unit — matrix, lunula, plate, bed, free edge — plus cuticle vs. eponychium and when a disorder means decline and refer out.
  • Chemistry of Nail Products (≈10%) monomer, polymer and polymerization, accepted EMA vs. banned MMA, and dehydrators, primers, and acetone vs. non-acetone removers.
  • Manicure & Pedicure Services (≈18%) the correct service order, one-direction filing, safe cuticle care, and the base coat → color → top coat polish sequence.
  • Nail Enhancements & Post-Service (≈24%) tips, sculptured acrylics, gels and wraps, the apex/stress area, soak-off removal, fills, and closing sanitation — the heaviest block.

How to use it in your final week

  • Lock the decontamination ladder cold: clean removes debris, EPA-registered disinfection kills most pathogens on nonporous tools, and only sterilization kills all spores — salon implements are cleaned then disinfected, never sterilized.
  • Front-load the two heaviest blocks — nail enhancements (≈20%) and manicure/pedicure services (≈18%). Together with infection control and anatomy they are about two-thirds of the exam.
  • Read the sheet the morning of the test for a final pass on the memory hooks — EMA is accepted while MMA is banned, cuticle is dead skin you may nip but the living eponychium is never cut, and polish goes base coat → color → top coat.
  • Pair each review pass with a short timed question set (100 items in 90 minutes ≈ 54 seconds each) so your recall and pacing stay sharp under the clock.

The cheat sheet is your review layer — your Nail Technician practice test drives the exam-readiness ring at the top of this page. Download it, review, then take a full practice exam (or drill with the study guide and flashcards) to see where you stand.
