HSPT exam at a glance
- Questions: 298 multiple-choice across 5 subtests
- Time: About 2 hr 21 min of timed testing (roughly 3 hours with directions and breaks)
- Scoring: No pass/fail — standard scores 200-800 (mean 500), percentiles 1-99, and a Cognitive Skills Quotient averaging 100
- Cost: Set by the school or diocese, generally $25-$75; you register through them, not STS
What’s on the HSPT cheat sheet
- Verbal Skills (60 Qs · 16 min) — synonyms and antonyms, analogy relationships, verbal classification, and logic — the fastest-paced subtest.
- Quantitative Skills (52 Qs · 30 min) — number series, geometric and non-geometric comparisons, and number manipulation — reasoning, not heavy computation.
- Reading (62 Qs · 25 min) — main idea, inference, structure, and vocabulary in context — always answered from the passage in front of you.
- Mathematics (64 Qs · 45 min) — order of operations, fractions and percents, pre-algebra, and geometry formulas — no calculator allowed.
- Language (60 Qs · 25 min) — punctuation, capitalization, usage, spelling, and composition — the most learnable, rule-bound subtest.
How to use it in your final week
- Lock in the number-series rules first — check differences for an arithmetic pattern, ratios for a geometric one, then Fibonacci and squares. Quantitative Skills question types are the least familiar and the fastest to improve.
- Drill the timing that actually trips students up: Verbal Skills gives only 16 minutes for 60 questions (about 16 seconds each), so rehearse answering fast and never stalling.
- Skim the math formula strip the morning of the test — rectangle area l × w, triangle ½bh, circle pi × r², triangle angles summing to 180°, and the fraction-decimal-percent conversions.
- Pair every review pass with a short timed practice set so the strict per-subtest clock feels routine before test day.

HSPT cheat sheet FAQ
Yes — the HSPT cheat sheet is 100% free to download as a PDF, with no sign-up required. It sits alongside Career Employer's free HSPT practice test, study guide, and flashcards so you can build a complete prep plan without paying.
It condenses the highest-yield facts from all five HSPT subtests — Verbal Skills, Quantitative Skills, Reading, Mathematics, and Language — into a fast reference: analogy relationships, number-series rules, math formulas, punctuation and usage rules, plus the timing and scoring you need to walk in confident.
No — the HSPT has no pass/fail score, so the sheet frames results the way schools actually read them: standard scores from 200 to 800 (national mean 500), percentile ranks from 1 to 99, and a Cognitive Skills Quotient averaging 100. A percentile above 50 is above average, and selective programs often look at the 80s and 90s.
It's built from the current Scholastic Testing Service (STS) HSPT structure — 298 questions across five separately timed subtests — and we review it against the STS materials regularly so the timing, question counts, and scoring stay accurate.
