This free CNOR cheat sheet boils the Competency & Credentialing Institute's perioperative blueprint down to the facts examiners test most, from ASA fasting times to surgical counts. It's a premium cheat sheet built by Capital Prep — the one premium prep we trust — and it's yours free. Reinforce it with the rest of your free CNOR toolkit: the practice questions, study guide, and flashcards.

CNOR exam at a glance

  • Questions: 200 multiple choice (185 scored + 15 unscored pretest)
  • Time: 3 hours 45 minutes
  • Scoring: Scaled 200-800; pass = 620 or higher
  • Cost: ~$475 application (includes first attempt); ~$175 retake — verify at cc-institute.org
  • Administered by: Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI)

What’s on the CNOR cheat sheet

  • Patient Care & Safety (25%) the largest area — positioning and nerve injury, Universal Protocol and the time-out, surgical counts, normothermia, and fire safety.
  • Infection Prevention & Control (16%) asepsis and the sterile field, the Spaulding classification, sterilization methods, and biological indicators.
  • Pre/Postoperative Assessment & Diagnosis (15%) ASA physical status, the 2-4-6-8 fasting rule, and the Aldrete PACU recovery score.
  • Communication & Documentation (11%) the intraoperative record, SBAR hand-off, informed consent, and variance reporting.
  • Emergency Situations (10%) malignant hyperthermia, hemorrhage and transfusion reactions, anaphylaxis, and LAST.
  • Management, Plan of Care & Accountability (23%) team roles and delegation, the PNDS and measurable outcomes, plus scope, standards, and ethics.

How to use it in your final week

  • Print it and pair each scan with drills — read one CCI area, then immediately answer questions on that area so the facts stick under pressure.
  • Front-load the intraoperative block: Patient Care and Safety is 25% (about 46 questions), so positioning, counts, and fire safety move your score the most.
  • Do a morning-of pass on the pure-recall anchors — ASA 2-4-6-8 fasting times, the five count points, the Aldrete score, and the dantrolene dose for malignant hyperthermia.
  • When two answers conflict, default to AORN — the CNOR is built on the AORN Guidelines, so the AORN-recommended action is almost always keyed.

The cheat sheet is your review layer — your CNOR practice test drives the exam-readiness ring at the top of this page. Download it, review, then take a full practice exam (or drill with the study guide and flashcards) to see where you stand.
